In early 2023 our history site under went some rebuilding to accommodate software changes and web hosting requirements. There have been some additions and changes to the navigation menu to make finding information easier.
This has enabled us to store and make available audio and video recordings as well as pdf formatted records of 'Tram Stops' and other documents.
History articles and images are easier to find.
Text Size Controls
On desktop and loptop computers, if you need to increase the font size to make reading text easier, look for the three A symbols in the white area below the red top menu. Click on the small A to make text smaller and the large A to make text larger. Keep clicking until it is the size you need.
Photographs
Want to see one of the photos in the Image Slider in a larger view?
Just 'right click' or 'control click' on the image you want and it will open in a new tab.
The second way is to go to PHOTOGRAPHS in the menu and look for it in the list. There you will also find a summary of information about the historical photo.
The third is to use the new search function. Try searching for 'Federal' or 'Grove Estate horse bus' or 'William Marshall' and see what photo comes up.
Smart phones & Tablets
The new version of our web site is flexible and a lot more smart phone friendly. It automatically downsizes and moves components around so you can see them easily on a smart phone.
If by chance you do have trouble seeing content on your smart phone or tablet most browsers show a Desktop Version button in the left bottom menu area. This gives the same view as Desktop and Laptop browsers including the full top menu.
Feedback on the smartphone or tablet view and how you have used them would be appreciated (
A welcome addition to the site is the comprehensive document search function.
The text of all AHS articles is now searchable by word and phrase.
Look for the 'AHS Search' box in the right hand column of all pages
(or at the bottom if you are using a smart phone).
1 - Type in a word or phrase into the search box
2 - Click the green search box
The search function will return a list of all documents containing your words on the AHS site.
It searches in document content, titles, and types of document.
It searches for individual words or phrases.
For example:
- a search for 'tram' returns 17 results including articles, photos, title of articles, words and also parts of words (eg TramStops and Tristrams).
- a search for 'water not waterworks' will return all results with the word 'water' but not results with the word 'waterworks'
- a search for 'oleander and sugars' will return all results with both 'oleander' and 'sugars'
- a search for 'a really fine view' will return an article containing that phrase
It is a quite powerful and easy to use SEARCH.
